Pietersite is a brecciated variety of chalcedony, a microcrystalline form of quartz, containing fibrous mineral inclusions. Its broken and re-formed textures create swirling patterns, while aligned fibres can produce a silky, shifting sheen known as chatoyancy. Colours range from blue-grey to golden brown, with iron-bearing minerals contributing warmer tones.
