Ruby is a variety of corundum (aluminium oxide) coloured red by trace amounts of chromium within the crystal structure. It is one of the hardest minerals on earth, rating 9 on the Mohs scale — second only to Diamond. Natural inclusions, colour zoning, and minor surface irregularities are characteristic of genuine Ruby specimens and are not considered flaws.
