Blue Onyx as sold commercially is a variety of banded chalcedony (microcrystalline silicon dioxide) that has been colour treated to achieve its distinctive blue-green tone — a standard and widely accepted practice in the gem trade. The treatment is stable and does not affect the stone’s durability. Onyx and chalcedony form within the cavities of volcanic rocks and are found worldwide.
