Obsidian is a naturally occurring volcanic glass formed when silica-rich lava cools rapidly, preventing the formation of a crystalline structure. It is not technically a mineral but a mineraloid — an amorphous, glassy rock. Its characteristic jet black colour comes from the presence of magnetite and other iron-rich mineral inclusions within the glass matrix.
