Ocean Jasper is a rare orbicular variety of spherulitic chalcedony (microcrystalline silicon dioxide) found exclusively along the remote northwestern coastline of Madagascar, accessible only by boat at low tide. The distinctive circular orb patterns are formed by radial crystal growth around a central nucleus during the stone's formation in volcanic rock. The wide colour variation — ranging from white and cream to green, pink, red, yellow, and grey — is caused by varying concentrations of iron, manganese, and other mineral impurities within the chalcedony matrix. Ocean Jasper was first commercially mined in the late 1990s and remains a geologically rare material.
