Onyx is a variety of chalcedony (a microcrystalline form of quartz), with Black Onyx being the most commonly known variety. Much commercial Black Onyx is naturally grey-banded chalcedony that has been dyed to achieve a consistent deep black — a long-established and widely accepted practice in the gemstone trade.

In crystal traditions, Black Onyx is associated with strength, focused self-discipline, and grounded decision-making — a steady, stabilising stone said to support wise judgement, encourage inner resilience, and provide a calm, anchoring presence during periods of challenge or change.
