Palo Santo: From the Forest to Your Home
At Kindred Crystal Collective, we believe that knowing where our products come from matters just as much as the products themselves.
Palo Santo has become a popular choice for those who enjoy its distinctive, warm & slightly sweet aroma. But behind these fragrant pieces of wood is a story worth understanding, from where the wood originates to how it is collected, prepared & supplied.
We want to share a little more about the Palo Santo we stock, how it reaches us and why natural variations are part of working with a product that comes from nature.
What is Palo Santo?
Palo Santo, meaning “holy wood” in Spanish, comes from the Bursera graveolens tree, which grows in parts of South America, including Peru.
The wood is traditionally used in some Indigenous spiritual & cultural practices. Today, it is also enjoyed by people who appreciate its distinctive aroma as part of their home fragrance, meditation or personal rituals.
When gently lit & allowed to smoulder, Palo Santo is known for its warm, woody scent, often described as slightly sweet with hints of citrus & mint.
Like many natural materials, however, not every piece will look or smell exactly the same.
Where does our Palo Santo come from?
Our Palo Santo comes from naturally fallen, dead wood rather than living trees being cut down for production.
The communities involved in sourcing this material work under permits issued by the Peruvian forestry authority to collect naturally fallen wood.
This is an important part of understanding the product's journey. Rather than simply purchasing a finished item without knowing its background, we ask questions about where our products originate & how they make their way into our warehouse.
Our supplier has also explained that the wood supplied to us was selected as first-grade export quality.
The shipment undergoes inspections by two separate authorities in Peru: the forestry authority & the plant health authority. The supplier certificates for this can be provided upon request.
Why does Palo Santo have natural dark marks & imperfections?
One of the things worth understanding about Palo Santo is that it is a natural wood product, not a manufactured item designed to look identical from one piece to the next.
Our supplier has explained that small dark marks can naturally occur in aged, fallen Palo Santo wood. Some logs have more visible marks than others, & even different sections of the same log can look quite different.
Before the wood is cut into individual sticks, it comes from larger sections of the trunk, which our supplier refers to as a “tuco”. The outer areas of a log may have a different appearance from the inner wood, & when the trunk is cut into pieces approximately 10 centimetres long, these natural differences become more noticeable.
This means that some sticks may have darker markings, variations in colour or a different grain pattern from others.
What about the aroma?
Palo Santo is loved for its characteristic fragrance, but the scent can vary between individual pieces.
The outer sections of a log can be drier than the inner sections, which may contribute to differences between sticks. According to our supplier, the wood should release its characteristic aroma when properly lit and allowed to smoulder.
If you are new to using Palo Santo, it is intended to smoulder rather than burn continuously like a candle. Allow the flame to catch briefly, then gently blow it out & let the wood smoulder. Always place it in a suitable fireproof holder, keep it away from flammable materials, never leave it unattended & use it in a well-ventilated space.
How do people use Palo Santo?
People enjoy Palo Santo in different ways, depending on their personal preferences, traditions & routines.
For some, its warm, woody fragrance is part of a meditation or mindfulness practice. Others enjoy lighting it while journalling, reading, practising yoga or simply taking a few quiet moments at home.
It can also be incorporated into personal spiritual rituals, where it is used respectfully & with an understanding of its cultural significance.
You don't need to follow a particular practice to appreciate its distinctive aroma. Some people simply enjoy the atmosphere it creates as part of their home fragrance routine.
However you choose to enjoy it, we encourage you to use Palo Santo thoughtfully, respectfully & safely.
Our commitment to better product knowledge
At Kindred Crystal Collective, we know that trust is built through honest conversations, asking questions and being willing to learn more about the products we bring into our warehouse.
